Strawberry Jam

Look what I did last week. I made a triple batch of the best (in my opinion) freezer jam. I have never found a store brand that even comes close to homemade. We just LOVE it!
I know this really isn't a recipe...but I had to share with you my favorite brand for freezer jam. Introducing...

This makes the BEST no cook strawberry freezer jam and the BEST part is ...it only calls for 1 1/2 cups of sugar to 4 cups of crushed fruit. It always disturbed me that the usual freezer jam packets called for equal amounts of sugar and fruit. Yikes--that is a lot of sugar! Anyway, I have loved this low sugar jam. It tastes more like fruit, and not too sugary! This jam is fantastic spread on thisor this!
PS When I can't get fresh strawberries (not the case now) I use the frozen ones from Costco. They are big, red and so fragrant--they make perfect jam!

Do you have a favorite homemade jam??

  1. I love this brand of Freezer jam pectin! I use it every year, I think it's especially delicious with fresh local berries, they are always sweeter than the imported ones. Last year I froze about 75 cups of jam!

  2. There is a strawberry field not to far from us. The kids love picking them, but there's only so many you can eat before they spoil. I've frozen some. Now, I won't be scared to go back and let them pick as many as they want. I'll have to get some of this mix- I have never seen it! Thanks!

  3. I'm so glad you posted this, we bought a freezer last year so we could take advantage of the summers fruits and veggies. I never know what to do with the strawberries except bake with them or freeze them whole. I always forget about making jam!!! THANK YOU!!!

  9. Maria-
I always get this brand of pectin at my local associated foods grocery store (Kohlers in Highland UT).
    Penni-
I also bought these Ball lids at my local grocery store--right next to the pectin. I think I saw them at Walmart too!

  12. This is the only kind of pectin I will use, after trying several others. I use the jam as a topping for cheesecake, pancakes, ice cream etc. It's perfect as a topping beacause it's like a thick sauce and not too sweet. I have been telling all my friends about this one too!

I made it with raspberries last year and it was awesome too!

  13. I just discovered this pectin myself and I loved it for the same reason you did - LESS SUGAR! It tastes just as good, if not better.

  16. I'm going to look for this pectin next time I make strawberry jam. I usually use frozen strawberries to make jam. My kids eat the fresh ones before I get a chance to get started:)

  19. I love this brand too! I love that it tastes more like fresh fruit! Last year I made a triple berry batch with equal amounts of strawberries, raspberries, and blueberries. It became our new family favorite!

  20. You know, I still haven't tried making freezer jam. I just always end up doing the water bath canning. I do LOVE homemade strawberry jam. I will actually be making some tomorrow!

  21. I am down to 4 jars of jam. I have looked at 3 different stores for the Ball pectin. I guess I might have to drive out to Kohler's. Thanks for posting this. See you next month.

  22. Michelle,
I am sorry you can't find it. Try Maceys or Harmons--since they are both associated foods. Let me know if you want me to pick you up some and bring them next month! I wouldn't mind at all. Good luck!

  23. Where did you get this pectin, Melanie? I have looked all over and can't find it!
It's always bugged me, too, that most recipes call for the same amount of sugar and fruit: I mean, it's jam, not candy, right? (although fresh strawberry jam DOES taste better than many sorts of candy in my opinion!)

  24. Andrea,
I am so sorry that you can not find this. I have always been able to get it at my neighborhood grocery store (Kohlers in Highland, UT). It is an 'Associated Foods' store--meaning it part of a large buying group and has the brand Western Family. Have you tried googling it? Maybe you could just purchase this brand of pectin online. Also--you could request it at your grocery store. I know the stores by me take requests and usually get it in for me. I hope this helps! It really is fabulous jam, so I hope you can get your hands on some of this pectin! Good luck!

  26. You inspired me, and so I made tons and tons of strawberry jam last week! I used both this pectin and the usual kind of pectin, and I think they are both fantastic, so it only makes sense to do the lower sugar one! And it's simpler to make than the high sugar one, too. :)
