Brown Sugar Ham and Beans

This is my Mom's (originally Grandma's) "Ham Bone Soup" recipe. I had to spruce up the name since that boring old thing doesn't even begin to describe how yummy this recipe is! I don't even know what to say about this soup..... it is mouth-watering, to-die-for delicious. I love love love it and every time I make it I horde the leftovers. Are you getting the picture yet?! :)I think there is something addictive in it too because my husband is starting to get as obsessed with it as I am! It is by no means healthy (definitely a special meal at our house) and has deceptively simple ingredients. Honestly, if I hadn't eaten this a million times (and savored every single bite) I wouldn't believe that it would be that good. It's one of those things you better take my word for. (The poor thing is not very photogenic either but I did my best!)

Brown Sugar Ham and Bean Soup

1 lb navy beans, soaked overnight

1 meaty ham bone

1 small onion, chopped finely

1 cup cream

1/2 tsp dry mustard

1/8 tsp ginger powder

1-2 cups brown sugar (I think 1 cup well packed is plenty!)

Place navy beans and ham bone in crock pot and fill with enough water to cover beans and most of ham bone. Cook on low for 3-4 hours. Add remaining ingredients and cook an additional 2-4 hours. Take bone out and shred remaining meat off bone and add to soup. Serve with a crusty loaf of bread and a salad. Delicious.

  5. I've never bought a ham bone before, what should I look for? Please describe for me what it looks like.

  6. hi heather, I actually am referring to the ham bone left over from when you eat a ham. Like for instance the spiral cut hams people buy for Easter? There is often a lot of meat clinging to the bone that doesn't get cut through all the way - you know? it's kind of a nuisance to get off... so instead just leave it on the bone and freeze the whole thing in a freezer bag until you're ready to make soup with it. It's fabulous!! The bone gives a lot of flavor too - MUCH better than using ham pieces. Let me know if you have more questions! Brittany

  7. Made this yummy soup last week! It was amazing! Only thing I didn't do was add cream. I added a little bit of milk but it was so good the way it was so I just didn't add much. Thanks a ton! I love trying all of your recipes!

  8. WOW!!!! I just made this today and it may well be the best soup EVER!!! Didn't have a ham bone (will definitely be saving the next one) but found a package of "Country Ham Pieces for Seasoning" which worked fine. I also went with the low-end amount of the brown sugar and may even cut that in half next time (and there will be a next time). I can't wait to get hungry again so I can have seconds! I served this with cornbread ("Calico Cornbread" recipe from Cooking Light and Easy cookbook).
