Super Soft Sour Cream Sugar Cookies with Buttercream Frosting
These really are the yummiest sugar cookies... soft, puffy and delicious! I made them today and frosted them with my activity day girls tonight. Then we played at the "Halloween Phantom"(Erin posted about this HERE) and ran around the neighborhood leaving plates of cookies on doorsteps. I left a few cookies at home to take pictures of for this post... but between a dropped plate of cookies that needed to be replaced before being left on a doorstep, cookie munching little girls, and a hungry husband...there were only three cookies left when I got home. But a cookie that doesn't linger around the house is the mark of a good cookie, right? Hope you enjoy them as much as we did! Thanks to Debbie Fetzer, a friend from our childhood neighborhood, for the recipe.

Sugar cookies are my weakness-wish I lived in your neighborhood! I've done the same thing during the Christmas holidays of delivering goodies to my neighbors. Such fun!

Hi Kelly,
ReplyDeleteI'm so glad you like our blog! I tried to look at yours, too, but when I clicked on your profile it didn't come up. You'll have to let me know so I can check it out. :)
We just use google documents, which are then published to the web. Then we link to them for our printable recipes. Send me an email at mindysterzer@msn.com and I'll explain better if you want.

I looooooooooooove sour cream sugar cookies! I will definitely try this recipe soon!
ReplyDeleteMmm I too LOVE sour cream sugar cookies. I am so glad that you shared this recipe. I have been wanting to find a good all buter recipe Thanks! I think I will make these this weekend with the boys:)
ReplyDeleteHow long so I knead the dough?
ReplyDeleteDear Anonymous,
ReplyDeleteI only knead the dough a couple of times to make sure it is one mass of cookie dough, then I roll it out.
Melanie's comment made me realize something, too. I just looked over the ingredients and realized I forgot one! There is supposed to be 1/2 cup of shortening, as well, I think. I am working today until 9pm, but I will double check that when I get home tonight and then update the recipe. Sorry!!!
Mindy
These are fabulous! no need for the 1/2 cup shortening in the cookie recipe, I made it as is and they are the best sugar cookies i've ever had. The frosting was a little much for me though, way too much butter & shortening, but others might like it
ReplyDeleteI was looking for the softest sugar cookie recipe and this definitely was it! The whole family loved them! Thanks!
ReplyDeleteOk everyone... FALSE ALARM! :) There is NO shortening in the cookie recipe. I was just thinking of the shortening in the frosting.
ReplyDeleteSwa and anonymous, I'm glad you liked the sugar cookies. They are my favorite sugar cookie recipe, too!
Making these tonight with kids. Did you add food coloring to frosting for that orange color? Would like to try other colors too. Thanks!
ReplyDeleteHi Natalie,
ReplyDeleteI did add food coloring drops to make the orange frosting. I used red and yellow to make orange, but it kind of took a lot of drops. If I would have had time, I would have stopped and bought the food coloring paste. You need way less and it works better. You can buy the paste at some grocery stores and almost all craft type stores.
Have fun!

How many cookies should this make? How flat should it roll out to?
ReplyDeleteI learned a few tips to help roll out sugar cookies: 1) roll them out in powdered sugar rather than flour so they don't get so full of flour and 2) put enough dough in a 1 gallon zipper bag so that when you flatten it out it fills the corners and is your desired thickness. You can then cut up the sides of the bag and cut your shapes. You can refrigerate or freeze dough in the bags to use later (kind of like your own pillsbury ready-to-bake dough, only better). Hope that makes sense. I haven't made your recipe yet, but I plan to soon.
ReplyDeleteSheila,
ReplyDeleteI am loving your ziploc idea! I have never thought to freeze sugar cookie dough. I am excited to try it.
Anonymous,
I would roll out the dough to a thickness that you like... it will puff up a little while baking, so roll it out a little thinner than you would like the actual cookie to be. I roll mine out between 1/4 and 1/3 in, but sometimes a smidge thicker for my husband because he likes the thick, thick sugar cookies. Obviously, the number of sugar cookies depends on how thick you roll them out and how big of shapes you are cutting out. I think with my halloween cookie cutters this recipe made approximately 35 cookies?
Hope that helps!
Mindy
I love sugar cookies. They are my favorite. After using the same recipe for years, my sister and I wanted to find our "go to" recipe. This is my favorite so far. And I think I will stop now. These cookies were so soft and yummy, yet they didn't fall apart when you pick them up. I still use my favorite frosting that has whipping cream instead of milk....whipping cream really gives a smooth, silky texture. Anyway....love these cookies and will make them often!
ReplyDeleteI made these yesterday with the kids and they are fabulous! I love love love the hint of nutmeg in the cookies and they are so soft and yummy. The frosting is amazing too! I ended up cutting out a cube of butter and leaving the rest of the ingredients the same amount and it was really good. I'm glad I did too because I still had way too much frosting afterward. But that's ok because I'm going to make another batch of cookies to share now! :) Thanks for the fabulous recipe, Mindy!!!
ReplyDeleteDo you think I can make these without the nutmeg? My mothers allergic to it .
ReplyDeleteYou can leave out the nutmeg if you want to. It doesn't have any scientific purpose except to give it a nice fall-ish taste. If your mom can eat Cinnamon, I'd personally replace the nutmeg with Cinnamon.
