This really is a great substitute for brown sugar. You can make it either dark or light brown sugar depending on the amount of molasses you use. (The above pictured is Dark) It works perfectly in baked goods, such as cookies! Maybe this is nothing new to you--but I was thrilled to find out that you can make your own brown sugar when needed!
On a sidenote--I have a question that maybe one of you can answer...can you use an ipad to blog? I recently bought one and I can not get it to work! Does anyone out there use an ipad to create blog posts? If so, how? Any pointers would be greatly appreciated! For some reason, I can not figure it out.

How to Make Brown Sugar

1 cup granulated sugar
1 TB molasses
Mix together with a fork, hand mixer or food processor until well blended. I prefer using my food processor, but you don't need any fancy equipment. It will take longer with a fork and you will wonder if it is really going to work, but trust me it will! Just keep on mixing and before you know it, you will have fluffy, wonderful brown sugar. For Dark Brown Sugar simply increase the molasses to 2 TB. Keep in airtight container.

I've had to do this a number of times and it is such a life saver! Now if only I can create granulated sugar when I run out of that!
ReplyDeleteYES! you can blog from your ipad. Just download the app for the blog site you are using. i.e. I use wordpress - i downloaded the free app from the app store - and I can post from the comfort of anywhere! :-)
ReplyDeleteI, too, learned about this incredible way to duplicate brown sugar. I was amazed at how much it was like (and is) brown sugar...my "ah ha, that is how they make it" moment. And it is truly a life saver when you are in the middle of a "masterpiece" dish and realize there isn't enough brown sugar.

ReplyDeleteRunning out of brown sugar has happend to me before also. I was lazy thoough, and just added the molassas and sugar into the shortening, without mixing before hand. Seemed to work just fine too.

ReplyDeleteI use this all the time!! I also store a saltine cracker in the container, to keep the brown sugar from getting too hard.
Now only if I can get molasses now... to make brown sugar ... where I am at (Mexico) there is NO molasses or brown sugar ANYWHERE and I need it so bad to bake !!!!!!!!!!!!! can anyone give me a clue on how to make molasses/brown sugar or where can I find it.... thanks!!!
